People Do Gossip

I was introduced to Sappho by the same person who introduced me to Dylan Thomas. The painting of Leda and the Swan here is by François Boucher from 1741. I don’t know why, especially considering that I’m an erotic artist, that I find it shocking that such a painting should have been painted nearly 300 years ago, but I somehow do. Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m usually drawn to the sublime, but here I’m confronted with the beautiful, and I find it to be a rather compelling work. Maybe it’s that I can see something of the sublimity of the Romantics working it’s way in to the ravishment not shown.

People do gossip

And they say about
Leda, that she

once found an egg
hidden under

wild hyacinths

Sappho translated by Mary Barnard
