Smudged with Tradition
When I moved to New York I started attending an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or ELCA church. Having been raised in a liturgical Missouri Synod church I was surprised at the level of liturgy in the ELCA: incense and crossing one’s self, ashes on Ash Wednesday! These were things that I’d always been told were Roman conceits.
Even though I disagree with much of what Hans Fiene has to say about social issues, I appreciate his take on the state of Lutheran tradition.
